History That Breathes Through Every Wall

The building that houses Atelier Studio was a spice merchant's warehouse in the eighteenth century, and you can still read that lineage in the hand-cut laterite stone, the wide teak-planked corridors, and the high-ceilinged courtyard where frangipani drops petals onto the sand-olive flagstones below. We have retained those bones faithfully and layered them with bespoke craftsmanship — hand-loomed linen, artisan copper fixtures, and original archival maps of the Malabar Coast framed on lime-washed walls. Staying here is not merely sleeping somewhere beautiful; it is occupying a chapter of Fort Kochi's living history.

What Sets Atelier Studio Apart

Every detail at Atelier Studio is chosen to honour the property's heritage while meeting the expectations of a discerning modern guest.

18th-Century Architecture

Laterite stone walls, original teak beams, and a colonial-era courtyard preserved through meticulous restoration. The structure itself is a landmark registered with the Kerala Heritage Commission, and no renovation has touched a single load-bearing original feature.

Nine Individually Designed Rooms

No two rooms share the same footprint or palette. Each space is named after a historical trading partner of Kochi — Lisbon, Canton, Muscat, Amsterdam, and others — and furnished with artefacts and textiles sourced from those very regions to tell a coherent narrative.

The Spice Table Dining

Breakfast and evening meals are served in the inner courtyard beneath a canopy of copper lanterns. The menu draws on recipes documented in 19th-century Malabar household manuscripts, reinterpreted by our head chef using produce from the hotel's rooftop kitchen garden and local Fort Kochi market vendors.

Personal Heritage Concierge

Every guest is assigned a heritage concierge — a local specialist who curates your time in Fort Kochi beyond the standard trail. Spice-warehouse tours, private Kathakali rehearsal visits, sunset boat crossings on the backwaters, and introductions to the families who have shaped this city for generations.

Private Events and Residencies

Atelier Studio hosts intimate gatherings of up to forty guests in the courtyard and the upper gallery space. Wedding micro-ceremonies, brand creative residencies, and academic heritage retreats are accommodated with bespoke arrangements drawn up by our events coordinator from the first enquiry.

Sand-Olive Palette and Slow Interiors

Every public space carries the signature sand-olive palette — warm mineral tones that mirror the Kochi afternoon light and the dappled shade of the property's old jackfruit tree. No screens, no synthetic lighting in the courtyard. The design philosophy is deliberate quietness.

“We stayed in the Muscat Room for four nights in February and found ourselves staying a fifth because we simply could not leave. The courtyard at dawn, the smell of cardamom from the kitchen, and the concierge who arranged a private tour of the Dutch cemetery at dusk — these are experiences that a standard hotel cannot manufacture. Atelier Studio is the real article.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to reach Atelier Studio from Kochi Airport?

Kochi International Airport (COK) is approximately 40 kilometres from Fort Kochi. We recommend pre-booking a cab through the hotel — our concierge arranges an air-conditioned vehicle with a heritage-briefed driver who will introduce you to the neighbourhoods you pass through. The journey takes 50–70 minutes depending on traffic.

Do you accommodate children and infants?

Atelier Studio warmly welcomes guests of all ages. Children above three years are accommodated in the standard rooms on a shared-bed basis at no extra charge. Cots are available for infants on request. Please note that the courtyard has unfenced edges and we ask that children be accompanied by an adult in all common areas.

Is the heritage building equipped for guests with mobility requirements?

Three of our nine rooms are on the ground floor and are accessible without stairs. However, the 18th-century structure means that full wheelchair compliance is not possible throughout the property. We ask guests with specific mobility requirements to contact us directly before booking so we can discuss the most suitable arrangement.

Can I book the hotel exclusively for a private event?

Yes. Atelier Studio is available for full-property buyouts for wedding micro-ceremonies, brand retreats, and exclusive corporate stays. Buyout arrangements include all nine rooms and the courtyard event space. Please write to our events team with your dates and guest count for a bespoke proposal.

What is your cancellation policy?

Bookings cancelled more than 14 days before arrival receive a full refund. Cancellations between 7 and 14 days incur a one-night charge. Cancellations within 7 days of arrival are non-refundable. For direct bookings, modifications are handled with more flexibility — please contact us at [email protected].
